Vestibular, Vertigo, & Balance Therapy
An estimated 90 million Americans experience dizziness at least once in their lifetimes. The result of this dizziness in elderly patients is a risk factor for falls that can cause serious injury, hospital stays and even lead to death. Although adults typically suffer from dizziness and vertigo disorders, children experience these disorders as well.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a form of physical therapy that uses specialized exercises that improve gait and gaze stability. Most VRT exercises involve head movement, which is essential in stimulating and retraining the vestibular system. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy has been a highly effective modality for most adults and children with disorders of the vestibular or central balance system. In a number of studies, customized VRT programs were significantly more effective than generic exercises in resolving symptoms.
